An evergreen to semi-deciduous tree with a much branched growth habit and a dense rounded crown that provides lovely cool shade. Long spike-like flowers are a yellow-green with sexes on different trees (Dioecious). Planted for the lovely fruits: round, velvety green capsule that splits open to reveal fleshy orange-red flesh that surrounds the seed. Flowers Sept – May; fruits Dec – July. Adapts easily to conditions, smaller in arid regions. Non-aggressive roots. Important butterfly host plant; great bird tree.
